Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his government’s intention to establish binding national standards for artificial intelligence data centers, along with the creation of a central AI office. This move aims to strengthen oversight over technology development and accelerate its utilization within a clear regulatory framework.

In a speech at the University of Sydney, Albanese stated that AI has become an essential component in boosting productivity in the Australian economy, supporting economic resilience, and establishing the country’s technological sovereignty.

The new AI office will report to the Prime Minister's Department and coordinate government policies on AI across various sectors including education, labor markets, climate and energy, intellectual property rights, and defense.

Albanese explained that his government will seek approval from Australia’s states and territories for proposed data center standards at a national cabinet meeting next month. The bill is expected to be presented to parliament in early 2027.

Australia's move comes as governments worldwide are working on new regulatory frameworks for AI data centers, with an increasing need to balance supporting the growth of the digital economy while ensuring energy efficiency, infrastructure protection, and safeguarding national interests.
