OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has announced that it will postpone the full public launch of its latest series of AI models, GPT-5.6, in response to a request from the US government. Access to these models will initially be limited to a small number of trusted partners.

In a blog post accompanying the announcement, the company explained that it has begun a "limited preview" of the GPT-5.6 series, which includes three models: Sol, Terra, and Luna.

OpenAI said it reviewed the launch plans and capabilities of the models with the US government before announcing them. It also stated that, at the request of the government, it has begun making the models available to a small group of trusted partners who have been informed by the government about their participation, before releasing them more widely.

The company confirmed its intention to make the models available to all users in the coming weeks. It noted that the current restriction is a temporary measure being implemented alongside work with US authorities on establishing a permanent mechanism for reviewing advanced models from a security perspective.

OpenAI emphasized that it does not consider granting the government early access to the models as a permanent procedure, arguing that such a mechanism could deprive users, developers, companies, and cybersecurity experts worldwide of the benefits of the latest AI technologies.

The decision comes as the US administration tightens its measures regarding advanced artificial intelligence models, with growing concerns related to cybersecurity and the potential misuse of these technologies in cyber attacks or military applications. This has prompted the government to request a review of some models before they are made available to the public.
