Social media platform Instagram has added a new, small but useful feature that gives users more control over what appears on their profiles.

The new feature allows the user to add posts in which they are mentioned to his or her main photo grid on the profile page.

TechCrunch reported that this update is not revolutionary, but it does fall under changes many will find useful. Most users have experienced returning home after a party, concert, vacation or night out with friends and checking in on the shared album only to discover someone has already posted one of their best group photos and tagged them.

While they could post it themselves, that might seem a little awkward. That's where Instagram comes in: users can add the post mentioned in the tag to his or her photo grid through a direct message (DM) notification they receive when tagged, directly from the post itself, or via the tab for photos in which they are tagged. Users can easily remove the post from their profile if they change their mind later.

Meanwhile, the original post remains in its exact place; adding it to your profile does not delete or duplicate it. You can also remove it from your profile at any time without deleting it from the tab of posts that reference it.

Instagram says this feature could also be useful for content creators, giving them another way to showcase posts that mention them without having to repost the content itself or use the “add collaborators” option. It could also be helpful for brand campaigns featuring multiple creators who want to highlight specific content – all of which reference them – within their profiles.

This update comes as part of Instagram’s broader efforts to give users more control over how their profile looks. Last June, the platform launched “reorder grid,” a feature that allows users to change the order of content displayed in their main profile grid.

Instagram also continues to add new tools to make creating and managing content easier. One recent addition is “first draft,” a new editing feature that automatically cuts specific video clips and removes silent or pause periods, so it can compile the best moments into an initial cut of the clip.

There’s also a newly launched “replace audio” tool that allows users to change the music accompanying an existing post at any time they want.
