Google has announced a major update to its Google Images service as it marks 25 years since its launch, in a move aimed at making the image search experience faster and smarter with new AI-powered tools, including the ability to create images directly from search results.

A New Interface for Smarter Results

Although the new design doesn't differ much from the current shape of the service, Google confirms that search results are now updated in real-time and sorted in a more personalized way according to each user's interests, which helps access the right images faster.

The company has also improved the feature of saving images within collections. Users can save any image through the options list, and collections will later appear in tabs at the top of the results page, making it easier to return to them and continue searching for similar images. The "Saved" page has also been redesigned to allow quick navigation between all saved images and collections.

Google explained that the new interface will be available in the coming weeks for computer users in the United States in English, with a Google account login required to take advantage of the image-saving feature.

Creating Images with AI Directly from Search

In addition to visual updates, Google is preparing to launch a new feature that allows creating images by writing a textual description directly within search results without having to leave the page.

This feature will rely on the AI-powered image generator Nano Banana, which will appear in the AI Overview section. It will gradually be available in all regions that support image creation through the AI mode.

The company also noted that users who do not want to see the AI Overview section can disable it through search settings.

Google took advantage of this occasion to showcase the story behind the launch of its Image service. It explained that the idea came after the famous green dress worn by Jennifer Lopez at the Grammy Awards sparked huge interest online. Users didn't just want to read about it; they wanted to see pictures of it, which prompted the company to develop Google Images, officially launched in July 2001 and now one of the most used search services worldwide.
