Google has added a new feature to the “Google Messages” app that allows users to enter a dedicated chat to get information about updates to the app and features of the RCS service, in a move that may anger some users who prefer that the messaging interface remain reserved for personal conversations only.

Official Chat within the Messaging App

The new feature appeared after it was first spotted several months ago, and it seems to have started reaching a number of users gradually. A window appears inside the app inviting the user to join “official chat” for updates on new features.

Currently, the chat allows a limited set of pre-prepared quick replies, while the user does not seem able to write regular messages, suggesting that Google may still be testing the feature before releasing it more widely.

The user can also learn more about the RCS service and some new features in the app, but Google has not yet officially announced all the details of this service or when it will be available to all users.

Will Messages Become a Space for Advertising?

The update appears to come through a server-side change, so the feature may appear for some users without the need to install a new version of the app. Users have reported seeing the invitation to chat within “Google Messages” even though it is not widely available even in beta versions.

The idea is similar to some chat rooms in other messaging apps, such as WhatsApp and Telegram, which are used to inform users about updates and new features. However, adding this type of conversation to a dedicated messaging app may not be welcomed by everyone, especially those who want to keep their inbox free from promotional notifications.

Google has not yet clarified whether it will provide an obvious option to hide or opt-out of these conversations, which could become important if the company decides to expand the feature in the future.
