Nintendo’s annual report for 2026 revealed the salaries of its top executives, which were much lower than many would expect compared to the company's size and global success.

According to the report, the company's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, received compensation of around $2 million during the previous fiscal year, while Shigeru Miyamoto earned approximately $1.54 million. Shinichi Takahashi received $1.16 million, and Satoru Shibata $1.03 million.

The report added that Takahashi and Shibata also received salaries as employees within the company, raising Takahashi's total compensation to $1.48 million and Shibata's to $1.22 million. In total, the four executives received around $6.24 million.

These figures sparked widespread reaction among gamers, with many Reddit users describing the salaries as "surprisingly low," especially when compared to what CEOs of Western companies receive.

For example, EA CEO Andrew Wilson received compensation of $30.53 million during fiscal year 2025, which is about five times the total compensation received by all four Nintendo executives combined. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's compensation was around $96.5 million.

Many see these salaries as reflecting the work culture at Nintendo, especially for Shigeru Miyamoto, who is the creative mind behind both Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda series. Some expected him to receive much more in light of his influence on the video game industry.

Others, however, pointed out that comparing executive salaries in Japan with those in the United States isn't accurate, as average executive salaries in Japan are significantly lower, which may explain this large difference.
