Spotify announced the launch of a new tag for artists whose identity is based on artificial intelligence, called “AI Persona”. This classification aims to clarify to listeners that the artist’s identity may be generated by artificial intelligence and does not “represent a real person”, according to the company. The classification is expected to start appearing in mid-September.

This tag will not only appear on artists' pages who state themselves as AI personas, but Spotify will also add it to their “related profiles” as part of its focus on supporting music by real artists seeking to build their careers.

Virtually, Spotify will exclude any content provided by these artists from editorial or algorithmic recommendations. However, users will continue to see their work within recommendations if they follow these artists.

Starting today, artists can state themselves as AI personas. At the same time, Spotify will review artist pages to identify accounts that appear to have a public identity, including the name and images used on the page, as though representing real AI personas.

The “AI Persona” label will appear on artists’ pages in mid-September, both within the profile bar and the "About" section, as well as in search results and song cards within playlists.

When clicked, users will be informed whether the artist has themselves stated that they are an AI-generated persona, or if Spotify has reviewed the page and conducted a “fact-based assessment” to reach this conclusion.

If Spotify labels an artist in this way, it will give them the opportunity to appeal the decision. The company will also provide users with a means over the coming months to report artists’ pages that they believe rely on AI-generated personas.

Spotify confirmed that the “AI Persona” label relates to an artist's overall identity, not how their music was produced. Users who want to know more about how songs were made can take advantage of the "AI Credits" and "SongDNA" features, which provide additional information on the music.

The company says its approach to AI will continue to evolve as the music system does in general, noting that it aims not to include annoying, random or low-quality content within the suggestions shown to users.
