“Like a drug”... Sam Altman reveals the reason for deleting TikTok from his phone

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, revealed that he had to delete the TikTok app from his phone after becoming addicted to it. He described the experience as “addictive” due to the app’s powerful algorithm for engaging and keeping users on the screen for hours.

Altman explained during an appearance on the Relentless podcast that he intentionally started using TikTok while his team was working on the AI-powered video application Sora, aiming to understand what makes the platform so addictive and how its recommendation system works.

“I forced myself to get addicted to TikTok because I wanted to learn,” he said. Initially, he thought he could control his usage, limiting it to ten minutes before bed, but it quickly escalated to an hour, and on one weekend, he found himself scrolling for three continuous hours.

Altman noted that he knew this habit wasn’t good for him, but he enjoyed the experience at the time, saying it was “like a drug.” After briefly managing to reduce his daily usage to between five and ten minutes, he ultimately decided to permanently delete the app from his phone.

He also revealed that he had disabled all notifications on his phone, including those for messaging apps, describing this move as “a significant improvement in quality of life.”

Altman’s remarks came in the context of discussing OpenAI’s philosophy on developing AI products. He said that the company does not want to design applications that keep users on their screens for as long as possible, but rather focuses on providing tools that help them accomplish what they want and then leave, contrary to the model used by many social media platforms.
