The South Korean space agency announced today, Thursday, that Seoul has completed the development of its first small satellite constellation.

According to the South Korean news agency "YONHAP," these five satellites are scheduled to be placed on board the NURI rocket for launch in October.

The Korea Aerospace Agency stated that the spacecraft set is part of South Korea's project to operate 10 lightweight satellites for high-precision monitoring of the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters, noting that a electro-optical camera with a spatial resolution ranging from one meter to four meters will be installed on the satellites.

These five satellites are the first Earth observation satellite produced in large quantities in South Korea using ready commercial off-the-shelf components; the country launched a prototype in April 2024.

The agency confirmed that the satellites highlight South Korea's continuously evolving capability to produce satellites, and pledged to enhance the country's competitiveness in the space industry sector.
