An increasing number of Instagram content creators are facing a new wave of cyber fraud, which exploits the platform's copyright infringement reporting system to pressure and extort money from account owners.

These operations involve filing false reports accusing content creators of stealing copyrighted material, which can lead to the deletion of posts or suspension of accounts. Before that, the fraudsters offer to withdraw the complaints in exchange for financial payments.

Fake reports threaten accounts and income
 

The danger of this method lies in the fact that the account owner may retain all their login data, but this does not prevent their content from being deleted or their account from being suspended due to repeated copyright complaints.

According to a BBC investigation, some content creators find themselves faced with two difficult options: waiting weeks for Meta's appeal process to end, or paying the fraudsters money to quickly withdraw the reports.

The investigation reported on the story of an Instagram account manager named «Lost in Time History», which has more than 1.5 million followers. He confirmed that he was subjected to dozens of false complaints this year, despite using publicly available or authorized materials.

50 dollars to avoid bigger losses

After his account was temporarily closed, the owner had to pay 50 dollars in cryptocurrency to a scammer to get it back. He considered this amount cheaper than waiting for the appeal process which could take a long time.

He pointed out that the delay in restoring the account in previous instances caused him significant financial losses due to the suspension of content and the impact on revenues associated with the account.

The demands of the scammers did not stop at limited amounts. A review of messages related to these cases revealed claims reaching up to 900 dollars for one withdrawal complaint in some cases.

A crisis that goes beyond individual accounts

The problem does not seem to be limited to individual cases. In India, there have been legal moves by several content creators who have turned to the Delhi High Court over allegations of abuse of Meta’s copyright system.

Previous reports also highlighted other methods suspected of being used to manipulate mechanisms for proving ownership of content, raising concerns about the potential transformation of copyright protection systems into a means of pressure and blackmail against account owners.

Meta announces protective measures

For its part, Meta confirmed that it has restored affected content in some cases and taken steps to protect accounts from similar attempts in the future. It noted that its systems are designed to prevent abuse of reporting tools.

However, the company has not yet announced a comprehensive solution to the problem and has not clarified whether the new protection measures will include all content creators who may be subject to similar reports.

This issue highlights a significant challenge faced by social media platforms: the need to protect legitimate copyright holders from having their work stolen while ensuring that the protection systems themselves do not become tools used by fraudsters to suspend accounts and extort their owners.

With millions of content creators relying on platforms like Instagram as a source of income, there is an increasing need for faster and more accurate response systems that can distinguish between genuine reports and fraudulent claims before causing financial losses to account holders.
