Content creators on YouTube will see an increase in the number of views recorded for their videos in the coming period, after the platform announced that it is changing the way it counts views.

Starting August 24, YouTube will count a view as soon as the video starts playing, instead of waiting for the viewer to watch for a certain amount of time. The platform already uses this method with YouTube Shorts since last year, and other platforms such as TikTok and Instagram also follow it.

YouTube explained in a post on its blog that content creators had requested a standardized way of counting views, aiming to reduce confusion between different metrics and provide a more accurate picture of the total number of people who watched the content.

Previously, YouTube required viewers to watch 30 seconds of longer videos before they were counted in the total. With the new change, views will be counted from the moment the video starts playing.

However, YouTube confirmed that the "Engaged Views" metric will remain available for content creators, and they can access it through the advanced mode in the YouTube Analytics dashboard, allowing them to continue tracking the number of views that achieved actual engagement.
