65% of employees feel nostalgic for the pre-AI revolution era

65% of employees feel nostalgic for the pre-AI revolution era

It hasn’t been long since generative artificial intelligence entered offices, yet employees are already talking about the world before it as if it were a distant time when first drafts were written by humans, mistakes had clear names, and accumulated experience couldn’t be reduced to a question typed into a text box.

The promise was simple and appealing: machines would do repetitive work, giving employees more time for thinking and creativity. But the picture that is forming in some workplaces looks more complicated. The tool that writes quickly needs someone to review it, and an answer that comes within seconds may take longer to verify. Meanwhile, experienced workers feel like years of knowledge are being outpaced by anyone’s ability to produce text that appears convincing.

A survey conducted by Adaptavist, a digital transformation company, among 2,500 cognitive workers found that 65 percent frequently felt nostalgia for the way work was done before widespread adoption of AI.

Early Nostalgia

The paradox is that employees don’t necessarily reject technology. Sixty-seven percent said they want their organizations to increase use of AI, and 73 percent confirmed these tools help them work more efficiently.

Today, employees are asking for more tech while simultaneously longing for the professional life before it. It doesn’t seem like a contradiction so much as it reflects a difference between the utility of a tool and how it is introduced into work.

An employee may welcome a tool that shortens the preparation of a report or organizes data, but then object when it becomes a standard by which their speed and value are measured. They may benefit from completing a task using such a tool, but they refuse to have their expertise equal an answer generated without knowing its source.

Interestingly, nostalgia for the past was strong among younger generations; 42% of Gen Z employees said that they preferred pre-AI working life, despite being the generation most associated with technology in public imagination.

Threatened expertise

Forty-six percent of respondents expressed concern about people’s ability to complete tasks that used to require years of experience by simply using an AI tool. Twenty-three percent said their personal experiences had lost some value, while 31% believed these tools reduce human creativity.

Mechanical competition

Half the respondents to the survey said that their performance is now directly or indirectly compared with content produced by AI. This comparison includes not only the quality of work but also its speed, volume and cost.

This comparison is inherently unequal; machines do not feel tired and are not held legally or morally responsible for errors, while employees are expected to match their speed, correct their results and bear responsibility for the final decision.

Over time, employees may use the tool not because they are convinced of its value but to keep up with their workload or their colleagues. The survey found that 25 percent use AI to meet increasing work demands, turning technology from a stress reliever into a new survival requirement.

The meaning of work

Looking back at the pre-AI office may seem like an exaggerated romanticization. Work before these tools was not perfect; offices were filled with repetitive tasks, long meetings, and human errors.

But nostalgia is not always about the past as it once was, but rather what employees believe they have lost: ownership of ideas, recognition for expertise, time to master skills, and a sense that work carries one’s personal mark.

Adaptest's survey included employees in the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, and Spain during March 2026. Therefore, its results do not represent all labor markets, and the fact that it was conducted by a company working in digital transformation should be taken into account when reading the numbers.
