AI platform accounts are no longer immune to hackers. Attackers can compromise user accounts on popular services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, just as they do with social media and other digital service accounts.

As users become more reliant on these platforms for work, saving conversations, files, and personal information, detecting any unauthorized access becomes a crucial step in protecting data. To enhance security, it is recommended to use different passwords for each service and store them in a password manager. Additionally, enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) when available can further strengthen security. ChatGPT and Perplexity offer this feature, while Claude relies on email login instead of a password.

How do you know if your ChatGPT account has been compromised?

To check active login sessions on ChatGPT, open the platform in a computer browser. Click on your username located at the bottom left side. Then, go to:
Settings > Security and Login > Active Sessions
This will display the devices and sessions from which you have logged into your account. If you encounter an unfamiliar device, you can log out of that device only or use the Log out all option to sign out of all sessions.

What to do if you suspect a password theft?

If you believe someone else has gained access to your account, you can change it after logging out. From the login page to ChatGPT, click on "Log in," then enter your email and press "Forgot password." After that, select "Continue," and OpenAI will send a 6-digit code to your email. Enter the code on the login page and choose a new password. This will secure your account again after ending suspicious sessions.

How to detect strange access to Claude's account?

In the case of Claude, open the platform from your computer browser, then click on the username located below the left side. Go to:
Settings > Account > Active Sessions
The active sessions associated with your account will appear. If you find a session you don't recognize, hover over it, then click on the three dots that appear on the right side and select "Log out" or "Terminate." If you want to end all sessions at once, you can use the option:
Log out of all devices

There is no password to change in Claude

Claude differs from ChatGPT and Perplexity in its login method; instead of using a password, Anthropic sends a login link to the email associated with the account. Therefore, after logging out from suspicious devices, you can log back in using your email, and you will receive a message containing the login link. Consequently, there is no traditional password that needs to be changed within Claude.

What to do if you suspect a breach of Perplexity

The situation is slightly different in Perplexity; the platform does not provide users with a list of devices from which they have logged in. However, if you suspect that someone else has access to your account, you can end all active sessions at once.
Open Perplexity from the browser, click on the username located below the left side, then go to:
All settings > Sign out of all sessions
After that, press Confirm to confirm logging out of all sessions.

How to return to your Perplexity account

After logging out, you can log back in using your email. Perplexity will send a message containing a unique 6-digit code. You can enter the code on the website to complete the login process. Alternatively, you can use the Sign in button within the email to log into the account directly.
