Japanese scientists are preparing to launch a mission to Mars’ moons for samples that could help reveal the origin of the solar system and life on Earth, in what would be the first round trip to the Red Planet, according to Japan Today Sunday.

The uncrewed “Mars Moon Explorer,” which is the product of a collaboration with the United States and American and European space agencies, as well as several universities and technology companies, could pave the way for eventual human exploration, the newspaper said.

The H3 rocket, the main vehicle carrying the Mars Moon Explorer, will launch from Tanegashima Space Center on Tuesday at 7:41 a.m., according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

The spacecraft will reach Mars in about one year, where it will orbit its moon Phobos for up to three years before landing and collecting at least 10 grams of material from its surface.
