ChatGPT has begun to reject requests asking it to write in the style of famous authors, both living and dead, in a move that suggests a new change in OpenAI’s policies regarding copyrighted content.

This change comes after users on social media platforms noticed that the chatbot was no longer responding to requests to imitate the styles of specific writers, which was confirmed by tests conducted by Ars Technica.

Tests Confirm Policy Change

According to a report on engadget, during the tests ChatGPT refused to imitate the styles of several authors, both living and dead, which represents a shift compared to an earlier study conducted by No Latency platform, which indicated that the robot previously allowed the imitation of the styles of deceased authors.

Agatha Christie as an Example

Engadget retested this policy by requesting a mystery story about a woman investigating her husband’s sudden disappearance in the style of the famous British author Agatha Christie, but ChatGPT rejected the request, explaining that Agatha Christie’s works are still protected by copyright and therefore it cannot produce text directly imitating her distinctive style.

An alternative that allows creativity without imitation

Despite the refusal, ChatGPT did not close the door completely. It offered to write an original story with the general characteristics of the author's style, such as suspense and building mystery, while maintaining a new style that does not copy her literary signature. The report believes this change reflects OpenAI’s new approach to reducing legal risks associated with copyright infringement, given the lawsuits facing the company over using creative works in training AI models. This is achieved by preventing direct imitation of authors' styles while still allowing the production of original texts inspired by their general characteristics.
