OpenAI has revealed its plans for its first-ever smart device, and Bloomberg has published a new report with additional information about its design and price. The OpenAI speaker could cost more than $300 USD, will be a battery-powered portable device with a camera and other sensors, and will feature “mechanically moving parts that suggest it’s alive rather than just a body that responds to commands.”

According to “9to5mac,” the report states that OpenAI is working on developing “around five different products,” but it plans to start with a speaker, which it hopes to unveil this year and launch in 2027.

The report adds that this timeline could change depending on the outcome of Apple’s lawsuit accusing OpenAI of using stolen trade secrets from former Apple employees to develop its upcoming hardware products.

The company has discussed pricing it between $300 and $400 USD per unit, and the product is expected to feature a premium design, use high-quality materials like luxury metals, and remain in use throughout the day.

"The product, which is essentially a smart speaker without a screen, will come in the shape of a circular ring about the size of a hockey disc," the report said. This design would set it apart from existing smart speakers, a category dominated by Amazon and Alphabet's Google.

Bloomberg added that the speaker "will be designed to work in different modes", including being placed in the user’s hand or on furniture at home. Its moving parts are intended to make it more dynamic, while more advanced AI models will support natural voice interactions that mimic human voice interactions, similar to ChatGPT's recently enhanced voice mode.
