OpenAI launched GPT-5.6 Sol in June as a flagship model within the family of three models, and both Sol, Terra, and Luna will be widely available on ChatGPT and Codex the following month.

OpenAI is releasing an edition of GPT-5.6 Sol specifically designed for everyday conversations in ChatGPT. The company confirms that the update will produce more focused answers, adapt the level of detail to each question, and avoid unnecessary formatting.

The updates to GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT are designed to provide more direct responses, use a more precise format, and avoid excessive details when they are not helpful.

For more complex tasks such as multi-step planning, research, or writing, this update allows for a more comprehensive response that keeps the main recommendation clear.

Plus and Pro users can use the new slider in ChatGPT on web, mobile, and desktop to choose the level of reasoning ChatGPT uses in its answer. It can be set to low for everyday questions or raised for planning, research, writing, programming, or decisions that require more thought.

OpenAI also confirms that the modified model is more reliable in answering questions involving dates, numbers, rules, sources, and assumptions.

In an internal evaluation covering financial, medical, and legal questions, it was found that answers containing at least one factual error were 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol compared to GPT-5.5 Instant.
