Galaxy Watch 9's charging issue: the watch overheats during charging, and an ice bath halves the charging time – Tech News.

Samsung designed both Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 to support charging using the official charger with a capacity of up to 5.5 watts. According to the estimation displayed by the One UI Watch interface after connecting the charger, the Galaxy Watch 9 should take just over an hour to reach full charge.

However, many users of both the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 have complained on Reddit since the launch of the two watches about much longer charging times, ranging from 2.5 hours to 4 hours.

The watch's temperature rises during charging to 44 degrees Celsius, which appears to be the main cause of this problem. One user conducted an experiment by connecting the charging base to a metal heat sink using thermal paste and then placing the heat sink in an ice bath.

The experiment showed that the charging time was reduced to just one hour and six minutes, which is about half the time it took for this user to charge under normal conditions.

The charger output remained relatively stable at 5.5 watts until the battery reached 71%, after which the charger gradually reduced power, a common behavior in charging systems that aim to preserve battery life.

In another experiment, a user was able to charge the Galaxy Watch 9 from 12% to 100% in one hour and eight minutes by simply placing a fan behind the watch. Thus, even simple cooling solutions can significantly reduce charging time.

The heat issue, along with the current heatwave that increases temperatures during charging, is likely to explain a significant portion of the growing reports about long charging times that emerged around the launch of the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
