Lenovo recently warned that the price of memory chips may not return to their previous levels, and it seems that these expectations have begun to materialize, as new reports indicate that Samsung is preparing to raise the price of memory chips again.

According to sources from supply chains and Chinese and Korean media reports, Samsung plans to increase the average selling price of DRAM chips by about 20% during this quarter after some of its customers were verbally informed of this increase.

This step is not limited to Samsung only, as it is said that memory manufacturers in South Korea are also seeking to raise the average price of traditional DRAM chips by the same percentage compared to the previous quarter, taking advantage of the continued strong demand resulting from the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure investments.

On the other hand, Samsung and SK Hynix face a class-action lawsuit accusing them of price manipulation and focusing on producing HBM4 chips for artificial intelligence with high profit margins at the expense of chips aimed at consumer devices.

The average selling price of Samsung’s DRAM chips rose by more than 90% during the first quarter of the year, then increased again by about 50% in the second quarter, making the new increase of 20% come on top of an already high price base.

This trend is expected to be reflected in the prices of end electronic devices, as companies like Apple have already started raising prices for some MacBook and iPhone models, confirming that they can no longer afford the significant increase in memory chip costs.

TrendForce expects supply of DRAM chips to remain limited during this quarter, with contract prices rising by 13-18%, while NAND chip contract prices are expected to rise by 10-15%.

Estimates also indicate that Samsung's 8GB LPDDR5X chips may see a price increase of around 20% in the third quarter, which could lead to higher prices for gaming laptops, ultra-thin devices, and flagship smartphones. There are predictions that global shipments of smartphones will decline by up to 11% in 2026.
