Reference Image

Is the image real or AI? iPhone may have the answer soon

Apple is testing a new feature within iOS 27 that could give iPhone users a way to verify that an image was actually captured by the phone's camera, rather than being created or edited using AI tools. The feature comes at a time when image generation technologies are capable of producing highly realistic content, making it more difficult to distinguish between real images and AI-generated content.

Reference Image links the image to an iPhone camera

According to information from iOS 27 beta versions, the feature is called Reference Image and aims to add data linked to the camera sensor that captured the image, allowing for later verification of the image's source and origin. Instead of relying on a visible or invisible watermark to prove that an image is authentic, Apple appears to be linking the image to unique data associated with the iPhone camera used to capture it. This step becomes particularly important as images can now be fully created using AI or modified in ways that make it difficult to determine their origin.

Apple focuses on privacy during verification

Information available indicates that the authentication mechanism was designed with user privacy in mind, so Apple should not be able to see the same image during the verification process. It is expected that the authentication process will rely on Private Cloud Compute, using specific information linked to camera sensor data and image metadata to verify its source. Another Apple device can locally verify that the authenticated image is still associated with its original source without needing to send the image being examined to Apple.

The feature cannot be applied to old images

One of the key limitations related to the feature is that it will not work retroactively on images taken before its activation. According to available information, Reference Mode must be enabled before capturing an image so that the source data required for verification can be recorded later. It is expected that the option will appear in camera settings within iOS 27, allowing users to enable it before taking photos they want to prove are from their original source.

One step to tackle the AI-generated image crisis

The feature reflects a growing trend among technology companies to provide means of verifying the origin of digital content, as generative artificial intelligence tools develop rapidly. In Apple’s case, the idea does not just focus on detecting whether an image is AI-generated; it also provides technical evidence that the image was linked to a real camera when captured. Thus, in the future, when sharing an image, the question may not be only: what does this image show? but also: was it actually taken with an iPhone camera or created or manipulated using artificial intelligence?
