Common Sense Media criticized the AI features in Google search engine, considering them as posing unacceptable risks to children, especially with the widespread use of Chromebook devices in schools.

The organization explained that what sets Google’s tools apart from other AI services is their presence on personal and educational devices used by children, which increases their direct impact on them.

The study results indicated that the AI Mode feature can complete homework assignments instead of students, and it may provide different answers to the same question, sometimes correct and sometimes incorrect.

The study added that the system showed concerning performance in handling sensitive cases, failing to detect clear indicators of suicidal thoughts, providing responses that reinforced symptoms of schizophrenia and obsession, supporting some behaviors associated with eating disorders, and even showing a positive reaction to cannabis use in some cases.

The organization noted that the AI Mode interface appears when selected manually by the user, while the AI Overview feature automatically appears within search results, emphasizing that neither of these features can currently be disabled.

The study concluded that Google’s AI features failed in seven out of eight key criteria set by the organization to evaluate the safety of AI systems.
