بدأ تطبيق واتساب في طرح تحديث جديد لمستخدمي أجهزة آيباد يتيح لأول مرة تسجيل الحساب مباشرة على الجهاز باعتباره جهازًا أساسيًا، دون الحاجة إلى ربطه بهاتف آيفون أو أندرويد كما كان يحدث في السابق من خلال وضع "الجهاز المرافق".

ويمنح التحديث الجديد المستخدمين إمكانية إعداد حساب واتساب على آيباد بالطريقة نفسها المستخدمة على الهواتف، وذلك عبر إدخال رقم الهاتف واستقبال رمز التحقق المكون من ستة أرقام، كما يمكن للمستخدمين الذين فعّلوا خاصية Passkey تسجيل الدخول بسرعة دون الحاجة إلى إدخال رمز التحقق.

وكان استخدام واتساب على آيباد يقتصر سابقًا على وضع "الجهاز المرافق"، الذي يتطلب ربط الجهاز بهاتف رئيسي عبر رمز الاستجابة السريعة QR Code، مع استمرار الاعتماد على الهاتف في تشغيل الحساب.

كما كان هذا الوضع يفرض عدة قيود، من بينها عدم إمكانية مشاركة الموقع الجغرافي المباشر، أو إنشاء قوائم البث، أو استخدام بعض أدوات التواصل مع الأنشطة التجارية، بالإضافة إلى تسجيل خروج الأجهزة المرتبطة تلقائيًا إذا لم يتم فتح واتساب على الهاتف الرئيسي لمدة 14 يومًا متتاليًا.

WhatsApp has started to roll out a new update for iPad users that allows them to register an account directly on the device as a primary device for the first time, without the need to link it to an iPhone or Android phone as was previously done through the "companion device" feature.

The new update enables users to set up a WhatsApp account on iPad in the same way they do on phones, by entering their phone number and receiving a six-digit verification code. Users who have enabled the Passkey feature can log in quickly without having to enter the verification code.

Additionally, linked devices would automatically log out if WhatsApp was not opened on the primary phone for 14 consecutive days.

With iPad now becoming a primary device, all these restrictions are completely eliminated. Users can now share live location, use broadcast lists, and take advantage of all the app's features without relying on another phone.

At the same time, reports clarify that WhatsApp will not abandon the “companion device” status. It will remain available for users who prefer to keep their phone as the main device while using an iPad as a secondary one. Both options will appear when setting up the application for the first time.
