The latest leaks suggest that the PlayStation 6 handheld may be more expensive than gamers expect, given the significant increase in memory and hardware component prices recently.

After Sony's departure from the portable device market with the end of PS Vita support in 2019, new rumors have emerged about the company developing a portable device based on PlayStation 6 technology.

According to leaks, the device may be powered by an AMD APU chip codenamed Canis, featuring cores built on the Zen 6 architecture. The chip could include six cores: four Zen 6c and two Zen 6 LP, along with a RDNA 5 graphics processor containing 16 compute units, and LPDDR5X memory with a capacity of 24GB via a 192-bit bus.

In this context, the well-known leaker KeplerL2 provided the first hint about the device's price, confirming that launching PlayStation 6 handheld for less than $600 won't be possible under current market conditions.

This comes at a time of sharp increases in DRAM chip prices, which could push Sony to price the device higher than current expectations. Additionally, using 24GB of memory alone may significantly increase costs.

Other handheld gaming devices face the same issue; companies like Lenovo, Asus, and Valve have raised the prices of some of their devices notably.

For example, the proposed price for a Legion Go S with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage is $1,580, while the Z2 Go model with less memory is currently available for around $667.

GPD also unveiled its new Win Max 3 device equipped with the Strix Halo processor, starting at $1,750, reflecting the rising cost of high-performance portable devices.

Under these circumstances, Sony may struggle to launch the next generation on schedule. Current estimates suggest that PlayStation 6 could be delayed until 2028 or even 2029 if the memory price crisis continues to worsen.
