Global company Google announced that it has exceeded its five-year, $1 billion investment target in Africa, while also revealing a new package of initiatives in infrastructure and artificial intelligence technology development aimed at accelerating digital growth on the continent.

These new initiatives by the Alphabet Group-owned company were announced during the first Cloud Summit for Africa held in Johannesburg, South Africa. They follow Google’s 2025 move to launch a cloud zone specifically for Johannesburg.

The company's expansion plan includes the creation of an advanced connectivity and communications center in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. This is the first of four communication centers that the company plans to establish on the continent. The new facility aims to connect Africa to Australia via the Umوجa submarine cable, as well as provide a new route to India, ensuring enhanced internet resilience and increased capacity.

In related news, Ghana will launch the first applied artificial intelligence laboratory in Africa. Its goal is to link local startups with Google researchers and give them early access to advanced AI models developed by the company.

Storytelling Techniques

In terms of supporting human resources and creative industries, Google is launching a program worth more than $1 million in partnership with the "Akon Group" owned by British actor Idris Elba to train creators from underrepresented groups on AI-supported storytelling techniques. This comes alongside Google's commitment to economic and social development through its program and the "We Think Code" foundation to build a digital innovation center in Soweto, Johannesburg, worth three million rand (approximately $183,500).

On another note, the company confirmed that its business accelerator program will support 15 companies in South Africa as part of its comprehensive commitment to sponsor and support 50 startup investment projects in Africa from 2024 to 2028.

For his part, James Manica, Vice President of Google Research and Technology, stated in a press conference that the opportunities for AI applications in Africa are vast and promising. He emphasized the company's full commitment to playing its role and working with African partners to enable the continent to maximize the benefits of this technological boom.
