Google has added a new feature to Android 17 called Pause Point within the “Digital Wellbeing” tools, which aims to help users reduce automatic app opening and aimless browsing.

The feature works in a simple way; when the user marks an app as a source of distraction, such as social media apps, there is a 10-second delay before opening the app. During this period, the user has the opportunity to think about whether they really want to open the app or if it's just a habit.

How does Pause Point work?

Pause Point differs from traditional app usage timers; the usual timer intervenes after the user spends a certain amount of time within the app, while this new feature intervenes before opening the app at all.

When an app is marked as distracting, a 10-second waiting period begins. During this time, the user can back out, start a new timer, or switch to another activity instead of going directly into the app and continuing browsing.

Currently exclusive to Pixel 11

Although the feature is linked to Android 17, current information indicates that it is currently available only on the Pixel 11 series running Android 17 or later versions.

This means that owning an Android 17 phone does not necessarily guarantee access to Pause Point at the moment, however, Google's wording suggests that the feature could reach other devices in the future, especially since the company described it in promotional materials as being available on "selected Android 17 devices."

Why might the feature be useful?

The basic idea is to break the automatic behavior associated with opening applications. Often, users may open an app just out of habit rather than because they actually need to use it.

By adding just 10 seconds of pause, Google is trying to create a short moment that makes the user think before starting a new browsing session, especially in apps that might encourage continuous scrolling.

Disabling the feature entirely isn't instant either; it requires restarting the phone, which is a step intended to prevent users from turning it off impulsively once it appears.

Does it reach other Android phones?

So far, there's no clear confirmation on when Pause Point availability will be expanded. But describing it as being available on "selected Android 17 devices" leaves the door open for its arrival on other phones in the future.

Pause Point appears to be a new attempt by Google to make digital well-being tools more intrusive at the moment when distracting behavior begins, rather than just telling users afterwards that they've spent too much time on their phone.
