US federal authorities have arrested a 21-year-old man from Florida, accused of participating in a large-scale cyber fraud operation aimed at stealing cryptocurrencies by distributing malware games on the Steam platform. The stolen funds are estimated to be worth over $220,000, and investigations indicate that thousands of users were infected with malware.

Games That Look Normal But Contain Malware

According to the court complaint, the accused, along with several accomplices, released eight malicious games between May 2024 and February 2026. These games appeared normal to users but contained hidden programs capable of hacking devices and stealing sensitive data. This led to the infection of around 8,000 devices and access to 80 cryptocurrency wallets.

The games mentioned in the investigations are BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova. Some of these games were previously removed from Steam after it was discovered that they contained software designed to steal cryptocurrencies.

Promotion on Social Media Platforms

Authorities explained that the accused did not just distribute the games but also promoted them through social media platforms and messaging apps such as Discord, Telegram, X, and LinkedIn. Their goal was to convince as many users as possible to download them.

Once the game was installed on a device, the malware began to collect user information, including data from their cryptocurrency wallets. This information was then used to seize funds and transfer them to wallets controlled by the accused.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) managed to trace one of the cryptocurrency wallet addresses linked to the case, which led investigators to the accused after monitoring his transactions on the Bitrefill platform, which allows the purchase of gift cards using cryptocurrencies.

This case highlights the growing risks faced by video game users, especially as some attackers exploit gaming platforms to spread malware. Cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of downloading games from trusted sources, reviewing user ratings, and regularly updating security software to reduce the risk of exposure to such attacks.
