Google is preparing to add a new way of searching for images within the Google Photos app, after a feature was spotted being tested that allows geographic search results to be displayed on an interactive map. This step could make it easier to access travel photos and old memories.

The new feature appeared in a beta version of the Google Photos app, according to an APK file analysis. It appears that it will work in conjunction with the "Ask Photos" feature, which uses artificial intelligence to understand user queries and find appropriate images and videos.

Searching for Images on the Map

The proposed feature allows users to search for images associated with a geographic location and then display the results on a map instead of in traditional grid format. For example, you can search for photos related to a specific place, and areas containing photos will be shown on the map.

According to available information, the images will appear in numbered groups, with the number indicating the number of images associated with each area. Users can zoom in on the map to access more specific locations, then click on one of the groups to view the images within it.

A Useful Feature for Travel and Memories

This feature could be particularly useful for people who have large photo libraries. It will provide a different way to revisit memories based on where the photo was taken, rather than searching by name or date.

The feature could prove useful when searching for images of past trips or pictures taken in a specific city or region, especially with “Ask Images”’ ability to handle user queries in natural language.

It's not the first time Google Maps has been used with images

Google’s Image app already provides a map-based view within its Collections section, where users can browse pictures according to their locations. However, the new feature appears different in that it directly links the map display to search results through “Ask Images”.

As such, users may not need to switch to a separate section to find images by location; instead, the map could appear directly within the results of a geographic query.

Google has not confirmed a launch date

Although the feature is already appearing in a beta version of the app, Google has yet to officially announce it. The company also hasn’t revealed when it will be available to users.

The feature could undergo further changes before its release and there's no guarantee that it will make it into the final version of the app; Google may decide to stop testing or change how it works.

If officially launched, “Ask Images” could give image search within the photo library a new dimension by combining AI capabilities with geographic data to provide an easier and more interactive way to explore images and memories.
