X Platform Settles Legal Dispute with Music Publishers After Three Years

X, formerly Twitter, and major music publishers have settled one of the most prominent copyright issues after both parties agreed to drop their mutual lawsuits, ending a legal dispute that lasted nearly three years without revealing details about the settlement.

Settling the case without disclosing the terms

The crisis began in 2023 when a group of music publishers, led by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA), filed a lawsuit against Twitter, seeking compensation of $250 million. The lawsuit accused the platform of allowing thousands of copyright-infringing posts to spread without taking sufficient action to remove or limit them, noting that Twitter was one of the few major social media platforms that had not entered into licensing agreements with music publishers.

In response, X later filed a counterclaim, accusing the publishers of engaging in monopolistic practices and forcing the platform to pay high licensing fees for song usage rights. Last month, it also argued that it was not legally responsible for user-committed violations, asking the court to dismiss the case.

Final settlement closes the file

According to court documents, both parties requested the dismissal of the lawsuits in their entirety, meaning they cannot be refiled in the future. So far, neither company has disclosed the reasons for the settlement or details about the agreement that ended the dispute.

Media outlets have contacted the National Association of Music Publishers for an official comment, but no response has been received so far. However, some observers believe that resolving this issue could open the door to new understandings between X and the music industry regarding licenses for copyrighted content.
