Meow! A Language for Humans

Meow! A Language for Humans

Sometimes we think that cats meow because they are “talking” in their natural language, but the truth is gentler and stranger: The moans we hear at home are not necessarily a language between cats; rather, it is a language that cats have developed with us.

Adult cats do not rely much on meowing to communicate with other cats. Instead, they use scent, tail movement, ear position, gaze, rubbing, hissing, and physical touch.

Meowing, however, is more prominent in their relationship with humans. Kittens meow for their mothers when they are hungry or cold or need care. As they grow older, this behavior decreases among cats. However, the domestic cat has retained it and found that it works well with humans.

In simpler terms: Cats realized that we do not understand subtle cues. We don’t read scent, always notice tail movement, or understand different gazes. So they chose a clearer sound, such as a short meow at the door, a long meow near the food bowl, a sharp meow in the car, and a soft meow when they want attention.

The language of humans

Recent studies tend to consider meowing as a flexible behavior rather than a single sound with one meaning. A study published in Scientific Reports in 2025 found that cats’ meows are more variable than purring and carry less individual information because they change a lot depending on the situation. Purring, on the other hand, seemed more consistent and resembled a “voiceprint” for each cat.

The cat does not use meowing as a fixed name, but rather as a bargaining tool. It wants something, it draws attention to itself, and tests the person's response in front of it. In an Italian study on human understanding of cats' meows, researchers used a database containing 440 meows from 21 cats belonging to two breeds, recorded in three contexts: waiting for food, isolation, and grooming. They found that humans can sometimes catch the emotional difference between the sounds, especially when the context is negative such as isolation, while having or empathizing with a cat helps understand the sound better.

Who listens?

Interestingly, cats do not address all humans in the same way. A study from Bilkent University in Turkey asked 40 owners to wear cameras when they returned home and then analyzed the first 100 seconds of a cat's encounter with its owner. After excluding some participants, recordings remained for 31 owners. The funny result was that cats meowed more at men than women upon greeting them. Reports on the study said that cats emitted an average of 4.3 meows when greeting men, which is more than double what they emitted towards women.

The proposed explanation is not that cats "prefer" men. Quite the opposite: researchers suggested that women are often more talkative and responsive to cat signals, so a cat does not need to raise its voice much. With some men, however, it may have to meow more in order to get attention.

This point reveals a simple social intelligence: the cat is learning about the person in front of it. The one who responds to the light signal does not need a long meow. And the one who doesn't pay attention, the cat raises its voice for him.

It's not just a sound

However, cats' communication should not be reduced to meowing. A cat that rubs its head on your leg is not just "being demanding", but it leaves its scent and announces friendliness; the raised tail is often a sign of comfort and proximity, slow blinking resembles a message of confidence, and flat ears may mean fear or tension, a curved back and puffed fur are a warning signal, and even silence can be a message because some cats are naturally quieter.

Scientists also mention that domestic cats have a wide vocal record. There is meowing, purring, growling, hissing, and short chirping you sometimes see when watching birds from the window. But specifically, at home, meowing has become closer to a connection button between the cat and humans.
