WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new update for iPad devices that allows users to use the tablet as the main device for their account, rather than just as a companion device linked to an iPhone. This is one of the most anticipated improvements, making the WhatsApp experience on iPad more independent and flexible.

WhatsApp users on iPad previously faced several restrictions, including the need to link the app to a primary phone during setup, and the absence of certain features such as live location sharing, creating broadcast lists, and interacting with business activities through some services.

Setting up the account directly on iPad

According to the new update, which is available in WhatsApp version 26.25.74 for iPadOS, users can register a WhatsApp account directly on an iPad using their phone number or account password, without first setting up the app on an iPhone.

Once the iPad is set as the main device, users gain all the features that were previously unavailable in companion mode, including live location sharing, creating broadcast lists, and utilizing business interaction features. Additionally, the account will not log out automatically after 14 days of inactivity with the linked phone, enhancing the reliance on the iPad as an independent device, especially for users who depend on it for work or study.

An additional option without canceling the current status
 

Reports confirmed that WhatsApp will not cancel the companion device mode, as it will remain available for users who prefer to keep the phone as a primary device and connect the iPad to it as a secondary device. When installing the application on an iPad, the user will be able to choose between running it as a primary or companion device according to their needs.

The new feature is gradually being rolled out to WhatsApp users on iPads through the latest update on the App Store, and it is expected to reach all users in the coming weeks.
