Google has released a new update for the Waze navigation app, supported by artificial intelligence technologies, which includes a range of features that make driving more intelligent and personalized, starting with a custom mode for motorcycle drivers, to a new mode that reduces unnecessary audio alerts, along with expanding the capabilities of the Gemini assistant within the app.

The update comes as part of Google’s efforts to enhance reliance on artificial intelligence technologies in navigation apps, similar to what it did with Google Maps, aiming to provide a more accurate and smooth experience for various categories of users.

One of the most notable new additions is the launch of the motorcycle mode, which is a custom AI-based mode that understands the needs of motorcyclists while on the move.

This mode takes into account routes that may be suitable only for motorcycles and alerts drivers to hazards that pose challenges for this category, such as potholes, speed bumps, raised pedestrian crossings, road shoulder ends, and narrow bridges.

Despite relying on artificial intelligence, Google has explained that the feature's accuracy is also based on direct traffic data and contributions from specialized motorcycle editors who continuously update maps and report hazards.

Previous trips

The app has become more adept at recognizing its users' preferences, suggesting routes based on previous trips alongside its traditional recommendations based on traffic conditions.

Google believes this feature helps predict the destinations and routes drivers prefer. It can be disabled for those who do not want to benefit from personalized suggestions.

Another notable feature is the launch of the "Less Chatty" mode, which reduces the number of outgoing voice messages from the app while driving.

This mode only sends essential instructions and important alerts, providing a quieter experience for drivers and reducing frequent interruptions that can be distracting.

Smart assistant

Google has also expanded its integration of its smart assistant Gemini within the Waze app, allowing users to interact with the app using natural language.

After being able to report traffic accidents through voice commands, the conversational reporting system now also suggests map updates using natural conversation.

The voice search feature supported by Gemini allows users to ask more complex questions, such as: "Find me the nearest gas station with the lowest prices," and the app will display customized results that match the request.

Gradual Rollout

Google has already started rolling out its customization features, “Less Chatty” and “Conversational Reports,” globally to Android and iOS users.

The voice search feature supported by Gemini is currently available for beta app users worldwide, while the motorcycle mode is being gradually rolled out in seven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines.

This update reflects an accelerating trend towards employing artificial intelligence in navigation apps, not only to determine the fastest routes but also to provide a safer, quieter, and more customized driving experience for each user.
