In a move that could strengthen its position in the market for smart navigation apps, Waze has begun to introduce one of Google Maps’ most famous features: traffic signal icons on maps. In recent weeks, users have noticed these icons appearing on maps, which is an update aimed at improving driving experience and increasing road awareness before reaching intersections.

Both Waze and Google Maps are among the most widely used navigation apps, especially by Android Auto users. However, each has its own unique strengths; while Waze is known for suggesting the fastest routes based on real-time traffic data, Google Maps excels at providing detailed information about roads and landmarks, making it easier to navigate unfamiliar areas.

Early Warning

The new feature displays a small icon of a traffic signal at intersections on the map, giving drivers an idea of where traffic signals are located before they reach them. This helps drivers prepare by slowing down or choosing the appropriate lane if they plan to turn.

Although the update does not display the color or current state of the signal, it provides an additional level of road awareness, especially at busy intersections or in cities with heavy traffic congestion.

Phased Rollout

Not all users have access to the feature yet, as it is being rolled out gradually based on geographic location or user categories. Waze has not disclosed an official timeline for its global launch.

However, many users view this addition as a significant step forward. Some Google Maps users have expressed interest in switching to Waze after it combined route speed with more useful details along the way.

Although Apple Maps often remains outside the media spotlight, it already offers traffic signal and stop sign display features. In 2024, it filed a patent application for developing a navigation system based on analyzing traffic signals and stop signs to select the fastest and most efficient routes.

The app has also seen continuous improvements in recent years, including step-by-step route development, adding 3D models of buildings, and other features that enhance the navigation experience.

Accuracy

Despite these advancements, many drivers still prefer Waze and Google Maps due to what they perceive as greater accuracy in map updates and traffic data.

Apple’s announcement of its intention to include paid advertisements within the maps app, where commercial activities will appear when searching for restaurants, hotels, or services, has sparked criticism among users. Although Google Maps already offers a similar type of advertising.

As navigation apps race to add more intelligent features, the competition is no longer just about getting you to your destination in the fastest time. It’s also about providing as much information as possible that helps drivers drive safer and easier.
