The reMarkable Paper Pro comes as a tablet based on ePaper technology with a color screen, and the company launched it in 2024.

It runs on a custom operating system built on Linux, which is suitable for its nature as a digital notebook focused on writing without distractions. However, competing devices offer broader capabilities thanks to their reliance on integrated operating systems like Android.

That's why one YouTube user decided to try installing Android on the reMarkable Paper Pro to see how feasible it is to transform it into a more versatile device. Interestingly, the experiment, which started as a trial project, ended up providing a very usable experience.

According to YouTuber Chalid Raqami, he was able to port Android 13 onto the reMarkable flagship device. Initially, the interface suffered from severe slowness, which is expected given that the device only has 2GB of RAM and a quad-core Cortex-A53 processor.

However, after making a series of improvements, the system's speed and user experience improved significantly, and essential functions like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi worked normally. Raqami was also able to improve power consumption, allowing the device to run in standby mode for up to 300 hours on a single charge.

The installation of Android on the reMarkable Paper Pro allowed for the installation of external applications such as Kindle and Microsoft OneNote, along with a web browser and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, including keyboards. This point is particularly important, especially since reMarkable sells its official keyboard for $229.

Raqami also developed a low-latency pen mode, which allows the use of the pen with any Android application that supports electronic pen input. This method was inspired by the pen solutions used by Boox in its Android-based e-readers and tablets. The fast pen mode can be easily activated by pressing a button on the navigation bar.

However, the most significant achievement of this experience is that Raqami did not have to delete the device's original operating system. According to him, he can switch between Android and reMarkable’s original OS in both directions within less than a minute.

Despite this, it does not appear that reMarkable plans to release an official Android-based device, especially with the presence of many competing devices targeting these users. However, owners of the reMarkable Paper Pro who want additional capabilities can benefit from this experience.

Raqami has not yet published the steps for installing Android in general, as some issues still need to be resolved. For example, the installed Android system is deleted when a new update for the original operating system is installed. Once these problems are addressed, it will be easier to share the installation method with users.
