GrapheneOS has revealed its plan to expand the support of its system to Motorola phones, in a significant shift for the privacy and security-focused operating system that has long been associated with Google Pixel phones.

GrapheneOS will start by supporting Motorola's traditional flagship phones scheduled for release in 2027, before expanding support later to include the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra phones. Support for vertical foldable phones will create a new experience for the system, especially with their small design and ease of use with one hand when closed.

GrapheneOS explained that current Motorola phones are close to meeting its requirements but lack some important security technologies such as Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) and better integration with security components. The 2027 phones are expected to address these points.

The project confirmed that the upcoming devices will receive 7 years of appropriate updates, relying on Linux kernel 6.18 LTS, with the possibility of moving to newer versions in the future. It will also support additional security features such as protection against reset attacks and USB-C port protection.

Regarding its collaboration with Motorola, GrapheneOS confirmed that the company will not provide financial funding for the project but will provide specialized engineers to help transfer and maintain the system. Motorola and Qualcomm will also contribute to addressing driver and firmware issues and improving support for security technologies.

Users will be able to purchase regular Motorola phones from the market, boot up the device and install GrapheneOS themselves instead of relying on special versions that come pre-installed with the system.

GrapheneOS also indicated wide support for communication networks, with the possibility of enforcing activation of technologies such as 5G, VoLTE, VoNR, and VoWiFi even in telecommunications companies that have not conducted official compatibility tests.

Support for Motorola phones is expected to begin in 2027, marking the beginning of GrapheneOS’ expansion beyond Google Pixel smartphones.
